Trauma Informed Care Training

Hopeworks develops and provides customized professional development. They consist of up to three 90- minute training sessions. These sessions are developed and delivered by the Youth Healing Team, a specially trained group of Camden youth skilled at developing understanding and practices around trauma informed care.

Level 1: Beginner

Hopeworks Youth Healing Team workshop will discuss ACES and how adverse childhood experience can affect the life trajectory of a person’s life. It will review different ways to engage students with significant trauma histories that have proven to be much more effective than traditional interventions, including Safety Plans, Self-Care Plans, and Community Meetings. Finally, the Hopeworks Youth Healing Team will practice these interventions with staff, making sure that they leave the training prepared to implement these tools in their classroom.

Level 2: Advanced

Hopeworks Youth Healing Team will first review the basic tools from the Level 1 Training, checking understanding and making sure that staff have a strong understanding of the tools. Next, Hopeworks Youth Healing Team will help staff understand why youth experiencing trauma act the way that they do, using accessible psychobiology and interactive activities to explain the evolutionary and biological forces at work. These discussions will include activities and information about brain structure, the evolutionary history of the brain and our stress response, and individuals’ responses to repeated, chronic, and toxic stress. Then, Hopeworks Youth Healing Team will connect that information to specific program and organization-level interventions that Probation officers can use, including the Systems Check and the SELF problem-solving framework.

Level 3: Organizational

Hopeworks Youth Healing Team will first review the basic tools and lessons from the prior trainings, checking understanding and making sure that staff have a strong understanding of the tools. Next, Hopeworks Youth Healing Team will help recognize key symptoms of organizational trauma. The training will discuss how organizations – even very high performing ones — working in environments of high adversity will tend to display:

  • High levels of vicarious trauma (“burnout”)
  • Lack of accountability for youth and staff
  • Fractured communication and organizational tribalism
  • Reduced efficiency and performance
  • Strained or closed external communications
  • Contagious stress
